Home decor trends for 2021

Home decor will witness a major change with the onset of 2021. As now, when the world has risen from the despair of the previous year, people want to reinvent and reorganize their way of living. This year people will prioritize home decor trends to decorate their living spaces, with a focus on 'space', as much of 2021 also, most of the population will continue working from home. Hence, space becomes an essential criterion when you have more than one office employee, a kid who needs to attend classes on Zoom, and elderlies who cannot finish their day without their daily dose of television.

Take a look at what will be in and what will be dated in the year 2021, so that your house is way ahead in the home decor game.

Indoor Plants for Home decor

A house plant brings in a lot of charm and positive energy wherever it is kept.. From animal-shaped planters to containers made up of organic material like the shells of coconut are being used for greenery in the homes. From retro style hanging creepers for your wall decor to beautiful blooms or gorgeous variants of cactus, there is sure to be a plant to suit everyone's mood. Do consider bringing in those potted house plants for a dose of vibrancy, color, and freshness besides cleaning off the air to filter out pollutants and releasing oxygen.

These potted plants are also a very good option for gifting, as these indoor plants will always remind your loved ones of you. Also, nothing can be more affectionate and thoughtful than giving a tiny plant as a decorative item to your friends and family, which will add freshness and warmth to their home accents.

Home Office

With the entire population being locked up, our homes became our workplaces too and that's when the necessity of a home office took birth.

'A home office must be designed as a space to induce thought,' says Andrew Martin's Martin Waller. 'It wants to have crisp, clear lines, comfort, and creative inspiration by way of artwork or patterned wallpaper. A desk light is a good way to add style’.

Multi purpose Tray

According to the latest options of decorative home decor accessories for your in-home workplace, crystals, plants, desk trays, paintings and handicrafts are a must, as on most days work gets tiring and these things will  enhance one's creativity and imagination. Similarly, the importance of proper lighting, clutter-free room, and proper ventilation will improve working efficiency.

Colors of the year

Every year design and trend enthusiasts eagerly await the announcement of the color of the year to be used in home decor by the company called Pantone LLC. For the year 2021, they have broken the tradition and have named two colors as the color of the year - The colors are PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating. A shade of grey and a shade of yellow respectively.

'The selection of two independent colors highlight how different elements come together to express a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting, conveying the idea that it’s not about one color or one person, it’s about more than one,' says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute.

Hence, the two colors will become an instant hit for the year’s home decor. The bright, cheerful yellow for hopefulness and energy while grey is a symbol of solid and dependable elements providing a foundation. The next time when you are furniture hopping for your corner, do consider giving a dash of yellow along with a subtle shade of grey to invite strong vibes.

The mismatch is In.

With houses becoming more inclusive and people spending more of their time indoors, matching furniture is outdated for home decor. Kobi Karp, the principal designer at Kobi Karp Architecture and Interior Design, told that matching furniture sets may soon be considered unfashionable. "Identical furniture and matching sets don't showcase personal style," he said. "I believe matching sets will soon be seen as a design flaw."

Instead of setting a theme for every room and synchronizing all the pieces of furniture, consider selecting non matching pieces with complementary design and hues. Quirky shapes, prints, and vibrant colors are not only huge mood uplifters but will be fuss-free and enhance creativity. The ambiance which a hand-crafted decorative item creates brings in a lot of warmth and also acts as the owner's pride.

According to Rachel Ashwell, founder of Shabby Chic “Without any textural elements, the all-gray look feels a bit too neutral, cold and outdated. This upcoming year will see vibrant, expressive colors come to the fore, whether in a monochromatic style or mixed and matched.” Hence, for your home decor it's time to say goodbye to the grey-on-grey look or complete white scene for the walls of your house.

Go Green for Sustainable Living

As sustainability being the biggest takeaway of last year, man has surely realized his delicate balance with nature. People are now more aware of opting for textiles like organic cotton, recycled polyester, and linen for 2021 trends rather than polyester, nylon, rayon, and other synthetic fibers. The handicrafts, decorative items and the upholstery is being made up of natural fibers for the growing need of protecting our environment.

This year will surely see less artificial or man-made materials, finally, plastic will be ditched at least from the nook and crannies of the houses and office spaces and more organic materials will be welcomed. People will prefer stones, wood, natural fibers, and natural coloring methods too for home furnishing.

The essential space.

The year 2020 has exemplified nearly everything, especially the relation which we have with our homes and the way we choose our home accessories. The shutdowns have led all of us to convert our homes into offices, gyms, and schools, resulting in the arising need for walls and partitions. Though open spaces and floor plans were appealing initially, now the home decor trend has shifted towards creating separate spaces for everyone's day-to-day activities. 2020 has made us realize that lack of space causes a breach of privacy and ultimately loss of efficiency. Latest partition includes, separating the room with slatted wooden panels, or using an art installation which also serves the purpose of a divider.

Though Danielle Blundell, Home Director of Apartment Therapy says, “I don't think this is going to be an overnight change, but I think that the open-plan concept is going away little by little. It started already and I think it's going to conclude starting with people adding room dividers, or bringing in a door or figuring out some sort of a solution to add privacy.” Thus, gradually more flexible layouts with separate corners for everyone will become a home decor standard.

Minimalism is a passé

The COVID19 pandemic resulted in people being cooped up in their houses for months and utilizing their shelters up to the fullest. The minimalist trend has said adieu as the number of activities which are now possible within the four walls of your abode has increased, and for that, it is very difficult if one is living in a sparsely filled home with bare minimum pieces of furniture not to talk about decorative items.

During the pandemic, people have resorted to online buying which has caused houses being cluttered.

A house is required to have arrangements and enough pieces of furniture to sustain the plethora of activities of all the dwellers.

Needless to say, most houses are now moving towards maximalist home decor. A more-is-more approach is all set to impress people. This approach encourages home decor with more layering, colors and risk-taking prints. To give you an idea, try choosing quirky and bright color pillow covers, a patterned throw on your regular color sofa to improve its overall look.

Marching ahead with the latest trends of home decor will not only add good vibes and warmth to your home but will also be a much needed break from the monotony of the last decade. With space being a necessity to cater the needs of the family, right partitioning of the space will play a big role. Sustainability and more eco-friendly choices will drive the home decor of the houses and offices. For a playful and eye-catching look, experiment with contrast and geometrical patterns, also one can add handicrafts for embellishing their house and also to support aspiring artists. Darker shades on walls will be replaced by the lighter ones, to enhance the overall energy of the house like pops of pastel in the bedroom design scheme will provide maximum calmness.
